The Broken Promise (Blood Feud in Albania)
A Radio Documentary by Jean-Claude Kuner
This documentary, directed and produced by Jean-Claude Kuner, a prize-winning Swiss-German author/producer, was originally commissioned by German Radio and appears here for the first time in English. Surrounded by reality sounds and traditional music, Stavri, a 21-year-old Albanian history student, explores these age-old common law traditions in their new and even more violent and lawless form. Because of a weak and failed judicial system, the Albanian people have once again taken the law into their own hands. Inquiries into the past and present from the vantage point of a young Albanian give way to a look at how these ancient forms of social life and tradition have continued to survive and resurface, providing a remarkable and emotional insight into the unfamiliar and strange world of the Balkans.
HIGHLIGHTS
• First world-wide release
• First ever radio documentary about the Kanun, the ancient blood feud code in Albania
• First feature on disc to advance an understanding about one of the poorest and most remote countries in Europe’s volatile Balkan region.
